From 2021 to 2024, Wānaka proudly partnered with Monster Children, Sony and Film Queenstown Lakes to present the Monster Children Short Film Awards—a celebration of storytelling and originality that provided a platform for filmmakers to explore themes deeply connected to the region. This collaboration not only nurtured creative expression but also reinforced Wānaka’s role as a hub for cultural and environmental narratives.
A Sense of Place (2021)
The awards launched in 2021 with the theme “A Sense of Place,” drawing 223 remarkable entries. Australian filmmaker Jake McCann won the inaugural award for his film Tales of a Western Road. As part of his prize, he directed A Place to Stand—a stunning visual tribute to Wānaka’s landscapes and deep connection to place.
Embracing Regeneration (2022)
The following year, the theme “Regeneration” invited filmmakers to explore renewal, sustainability, and cultural resilience. Kieran Mpetyane Satour won with NGURRAWAANA, a powerful film documenting Yindjibarndi man Wimiya Woodley’s journey back to his homelands. Kieran then produced, MAHIKA KAI, which focused on Kāi Tahu cultural conservators revitalising traditional Māori food practices in Wānaka—an inspiring story of resilience and activism.
Showcasing Local Talent & Creative Excellence
The awards provided a platform for global filmmakers while also highlighting the expertise of local production crews. It reinforced Wānaka’s reputation as a world-class filming destination, where breathtaking landscapes and skilled professionals come together to bring creative visions to life.
A Lasting Legacy
After four incredible years, the Monster Children Short Film Awards concluded in 2024, having fostered a global appreciation for Wānaka’s cultural and environmental storytelling. This partnership not only celebrated cinematic artistry but also strengthened the region’s identity as a leader in place-based storytelling. The Queenstown Lakes is now New Zealand’s second-largest creative hub, offering world-class production facilities and a highly skilled workforce. The film industry continues to create opportunities in cinematography, post-production, and visual effects, strengthening the local creative economy.
