Wānaka Hotel Embraces Solar Energy
One of Wānaka’s oldest and largest accommodations, the Wānaka Hotel, is proving that sustainability and business success can go hand in hand.
With the recent installation of 50 solar panels on its roof, the hotel has taken a bold step towards self-sufficiency, reinforcing its long-standing commitment to sustainable operations.
Harnessing Solar Power
In partnership with Wānaka Solar, the hotel has replaced its old diesel heating system with modern, commercial-grade heat pumps powered by solar energy. This transition marks a significant milestone for the historic building.
“We’re an older building, which comes with challenges, but the team at Wānaka Solar made the process seamless,” says Jo from the Wānaka Hotel.
The shift to solar was not just about upgrading technology—it was about future-proofing their operations and reducing their carbon footprint. By adopting a fully electric heating system, the hotel acknowledged the inevitable increase in power consumption but saw solar energy as the natural solution.
The Benefits of Going Solar
Reduced Costs: The solar panels have dramatically decreased the hotel’s energy bills, with large portions of their daily operations now powered entirely by the sun.
Future Savings: While the upfront investment was significant, the hotel anticipates a quick return on investment due to the savings from eliminating diesel usage.
A Two-Stage Approach: The project is being rolled out in two stages. The first stage saw the installation of solar panels on the north-facing section of the building. Over the next year, the hotel will closely monitor its energy consumption to optimise the system. Future plans include installing additional panels on the western aspect of the building and exploring battery storage solutions to address supply constraints.
Responding to Regional Energy Challenges
This move also addresses a broader issue facing the region: the limited capacity of power lines from Cromwell to meet the growing energy demands of Wānaka and Queenstown. By generating their own electricity, the Wānaka Hotel is not only reducing its reliance on centralised systems but also helping to ease the strain on local infrastructure. This approach supports the long-term sustainability of the region’s energy network.
Beyond Solar: A Holistic Approach to Sustainability
The Wānaka Hotel’s commitment to sustainability doesn’t stop at renewable energy. Their efforts span across environmental, social, and economic initiatives, earning them a Qualmark Silver Award.
Plastic-Free Commitment: They have eliminated single-use plastic bags and partnered with Beyond Skin Deep to repurpose used plastic bottles into fence posts.
Eco-Friendly Cleaning: The hotel has swapped out harsh chemicals for microfibre cleaning cloths, ensuring safer working conditions for staff and a reduced impact on the environment.
Key Takeaways
- Invest in Renewable Energy: Solar panels can cut operational costs while supporting the region’s energy resilience.
- Future-Proof Your Business: Transitioning from fossil fuels to electric systems not only reduces emissions but also prepares your business for inevitable energy shifts.
- Think Holistically: Sustainability goes beyond energy—consider waste reduction, eco-friendly practices, and community partnerships.
- Monitor and Adapt: Implement changes in stages, track their impact, and refine your approach over time.
